How to Use StackTail

StackTail helps you track everything you own across multiple locations. From homes to storage units, warehouses to offices — keep perfect inventory of all your belongings.

Core Concepts

  • Setups — A complete location (e.g., Home, Office)
  • Rooms — Spaces within a setup (e.g., Kitchen, Bedroom)
  • Storage Units — Containers or furniture (e.g., Shelf, Box)
  • Items — Individual things you own

Getting Started

  1. Create your first setupTap the ➕ button on the home screen and select "New Setup". Give it a name like "My Home" or "Storage Unit A".
  2. Add roomsOpen your setup and tap "Add Room". Name it (e.g., Kitchen, Garage, Bedroom) and customize the color.
  3. Add storage unitsInside a room, tap "Add Storage Unit". This could be a shelf, cabinet, box, or drawer. You can set grid dimensions for precise organization.
  4. Add itemsIn a storage unit, add items manually or use AI scanning with your camera. Take a photo and the AI (powered by a cloud model) will identify the item and fill in the details. Each scan uses one AI credit.

AI-Powered Features

AI Item Detection

Take a photo of any item and AI will automatically identify it, suggest a name, category, and relevant details like brand, color, or size.

Storage Unit Scanning

Point your camera at a storage unit and AI will detect compartments and their contents, making it easy to log what's inside at a glance.

Category Classification

Items are automatically classified into categories: Books, Clothing, Shoes, Accessories, Jewellery, Food, Beverages, Electronics, and more.

How AI Works

  • Cloud-powered — Item and storage unit scanning uses an external AI model. An internet connection is required and each scan uses one AI credit.
  • Auto-run after photo — AI analyzes immediately after taking a photo.
  • AI Credits — Each scan costs one credit. Check your balance and top up anytime in Settings → Credits & Usage.

Organization Tools

Custom Groups

Create groups like "Wine Collection", "To Sell", "Camping Gear", or "Documents to Renew". Add items from anywhere in your setups.

Smart Tags

Tag items for quick filtering and search. Create tags like "Fragile", "Seasonal", "Important", or "For Donation". Up to 3 tags per item.

Grid Organization

Visualize storage units with interactive grids. Place items in specific slots (A1, B3, etc.) for exact location tracking. Switch any storage unit between List and Grid view using the toggle at the top — your choice is remembered per unit.

Powerful Search

Find anything instantly. Search by name, category, location, tags, or any detail. See the complete path from setup to item.

Quick Use

Used something up? Tap Quick Use on the home screen, search the item, and adjust its quantity right there — no digging through rooms and units.

Restock List

The Restock button gathers every item that's running low or out into one shopping list, with a badge showing how many need attention. Top each one back up in a tap.

Expiry Dates & Reminders

For perishables, turn on "Track expiry date" when editing an item. They appear in an Expiring section at the top of Restock, and you can set a per-item reminder to be notified a chosen number of days before.

Quantity Units

Quantities are a plain count by default, but you can give an item a unit like kg, L, g, or ml in the editor — handy for things measured by weight or volume.

Tips & Tricks

  • Always take photos — Photos make items instantly recognizable and help with AI detection
  • Use color coding — Assign colors to rooms and storage units for faster visual navigation
  • Track quantities — Enable "Confirm deletion at zero quantity" in Settings to prevent accidental removal
  • Grid dimensions matter — Set realistic grid sizes (a shelf might be 4×2, a large drawer 6×3)
  • Regular backups — Export backups regularly and store them in iCloud Drive or email them to yourself
  • Fill in detailed fields — Brand, color, size, and other category-specific fields make searching far more powerful
  • Group similar items — Create groups for collections that span multiple locations, like wine, books, or items to sell
  • Watch your credits — Each AI scan uses one credit. Check your balance in Settings → Credits & Usage and top up from the store if you run out.
